Not everything I want to say can be published as journalism. When you write for a publication, you write for your editor and, distantly, for an audience. Every outlet has its style and governing ideologies, and you nip and tuck your prose to meet expectations. The process, fortunately, is mostly unconscious. But at a time when technology journalism is unusually constrained, these essays express what I really think about important subjects, which otherwise have no home.
